Bridging our past for our future!
Thank you for dropping by. Our website has been created to feature the local textile and other products that will be sold under the Trademark of SUANOY HOUSE OF CULTURE.
When we conceptualized the logo we had in mind an independent and hardworking woman who carries a load of taro leaves on her head. A picture that comes to my mind everytime my Nanay Ding tells me stories on how they made a living in a small swampy barrio of Cagbunga in Camarines Sur.
I can even remember using an abaca kulambo (kubong in Bicol) made out of abaca which is locally termed as habol. I would even excitedly peeped in a small bodega where the habol was kept and forgotten.
Not anymore because we will keep the threads shedding, picking and beating.
It all started with a Palda worn by Belle, my friend who teaches at La Salle. The skirt was a locally weaved cloth from Mindanao which caught my eye. We are Anthropology graduates of UP Diliman and we study ethnographies. We love our culture and most importantly we are seeing the demise of our material culture because globalization has dictated convenience, affordability and accessibility of goods. Little do we know that our rich culture have been shelved and replaced by goods preventing local industry growth.
With the Suanoy, House of Culture we will introduce the local culture especially our local textiles and clothing to the market. Creating a trend that these cloths are not only for the affluent but for every Filipino who love the ethnic look and vibe.
We started with sending requests to all organizations of local weavers to supply us of the textiles. It was almost dawn of July 27, 2019 when all requests were sent. A few hours after I woke up with an email from the INDAG-AN PRIMARY MULTI-PURPOSE COOPERATIVE of Iloilo City and everything is history.
This advocacy cum business has to be a team effort. We can only save our culture if there is consciousness and understanding of what is at stake. Our local weavers and entrepreneurs need patronage more than just sympathy.
Now, as we embark in this endeavor and strategize, we invite you to drop by our social sites, LIKE AND SHARE, if we are lucky enough CALL US and get your first piece or add to your current collection. And we assure you will say it is worth it.
Our country’s textiles are not only for the history books, not just for mannequins but for every ISKO, ISKA, JUAN, MARIA and, everyone.
Our rich culture needs everyone’s help.
